TOPIC: How To Display Powerpoint with Sermons

How To Display Powerpoint with Sermons 01 Jan 2010 04:50 #1625

I would like to be able to show powerpoint presentations along with some of the sermons (where the user may not have powerpoint installed of course). What I would really like is if either in the list or in the details view a link is provided so the user can browse the powerpoint (while listening to the message).

e.g. from www.chippenhamevangelicalchurch.info/ind...emenuid=1&id=475
or www.chippenhamevangelicalchurch.info/ind...atemenuid=1&id=9
or www.chippenhamevangelicalchurch.info/ind...hp/resources/sermons

So really there are two questions.

1) What is the best way to provide a link from the sermon the powerpoint?
2) How do I get the powerpoint to view in a browser (what format, tools needed, etc.)?

Any help anyone can offer would be much appreciated.

Hi,
Here is a thought I have, but Tom would know a lot more about it so he can tell you if there is a better way.

Could you add in the MEDIA IMAGE tab, an image for powerpoint. Then add a link to your powerpoint file under the MEDIA FILES tab and select the powerpoint image as the media type, and also link it to the Bible study desired.

As for the powerpoint as a webpage - you can save a powerpoint presentation as a webpage. Choose save as webpage instead of just choosing save.

Becky is right. Upload a PowerPoint image to your images directory used in com_biblestudy (set on the admin side), create a link to it from the Media tab on the backend of com_biblestudy, then upload your powerpoint and create a new mediafile record and connect it to your study.

As for how to show PowerPoint to someone who does not have PowerPoint, perhaps someone else has info on that.

Blessings,

Tom

Thanks for the pointer on how to add new media images etc. and for the suggestions ref PPT. The problem with PPT's "Save as HTML" is that it works OK-ish in IE but not in other browsers.

I have found I can use iSpring to convert PPT to flash and maybe that is the best option - or for simpler PPTs maybe save as PDF will work OK. So I assume for that I will just need to add a new image for PDF in the media images and that will work fine (and there's a PDF icon already available!).

You might find this video interesting - our trainee pastor's wife put it together for our trainee pastor to give a family talk at our Christmas Family Service!

This one shows a PPT converted to flash, but the audio remains as a separate media file - the disadvanteb is the user has to scroll through the PPT in tme to the talk!

I have followed these instructions and the link to the PowerPoint does not show - well, not exactly.

It takes some time to fully draw the page. Initially there is some information shown about the PowerPoint (Some text surrounded by curley brackets), but this is then overriden / shunted right and out of sight by the mp3 download button.

What do I need to do now?

Thanks
