TOPIC: Search problem and general question

Search problem and general question 29 Nov 2007 12:22 #9

Hi Tom - Thanks for RC3 - the dual-tone layout works great and I now have the component up and running on the site I am developing.

I have installed the search plug-in but on testing although search finds the results correctly it does not make it possible to click on the result - I see that your demo site works prefectly so maybe it's a template or another nightly build issue - To see what I mean if you go to this page on my site:
www.stpaulskingston.org.uk/index.php?opt...d=1&Itemid=4 and search (top right) for \"Potter\" it will return a bible study result. (other searches for normal content work ok)

There are 2 possible menu item types - studies list and studies view - studies view does not seem to work? see the bottom menu link on the above page - it just gives a page with a date in 1970 - I couldn't find a page on the demo site that showed what It should display.

A general question on the purpose of \"series\" etc being entered in the DB - The help mentions that users can search for series on the front end - but I could not find any way to do this, joomla search does not find the series if you search for it. Other than being able to display it in the table there I couldn't find any other function - I was hoping to be able to list studies by series or topic, or teacher? Is that possible?

Thanks again for what is a very promising looking component.

Rich

Rich: I'm really glad for someone to help me troubleshoot the component.

I'm looking into the issues. I looked at the page source of your search result. The link is there but the text for the link is not. I'll need to see if that is a template or build issue as you suggested.

On the views - that's a problem I ran into, how to make the studiesview invisible to the admin. I think I know how to do it but I need some answers.

I'll check on the series. I thought I had that on the front end, but I think I can also add it to the search plugin.

I'm also thinking of creating a plugin that you could include in a content item a series or teacher, etc like {biblestudy seriesid=2} and it would list links to the series items. Would something like that be useful?

Rich: I have solved the first problem. I'm really glad you pointed out that the series were not available on the frontend. In fact, none of the searches were available due to an xml error in the config.xml file.

I fixed it and have attached it and the RC3.1 component.

The easiest thing to do is just copy the config.xml file to the administrator/components/com_biblestudy folder, overwriting the old file, then go to the backend of the component and open the preferences. You will see the options to show all the different filter types including series. Save the preferences then check out the front end.

You will to rename the file from config._xml_ to config.xml. You can get the new component in the file download area on Joomlacode (see link on main left menu.

Rich:

I haven't been able to replicate the plugin problem. I installed the build from 11-28-2007 on another test machine and ran the search plugin and it provided text with a link.

Is it possible that your template css is messing with the tag somehow? I'll keep looking around.

Not nearly as glad as I am to have someone write it!

With the drop down search selections now working it is exactly what I was looking for - Thank you again for fixing this so fast.

I will look into the search issue from my end - it's a yootheme 1.5 native template and im not a css expert but I'll see if i can turn up anything.

I think the {} series link in content would be a useful function. It would be good to also be able to change the module results list - at the moment its latest studies, but could easily be latest in a series or by a teacher or topic etc, example use would be on a 'youth page' the module could diplay relevant recent studies from our youthworker?

Other things I'd love to see in a later release are RSS\podcast generation, and a simple upload function so our church administrator can create and upload the file without using a seperate ftp software - If this upload function could also set ID3 tags for title and teacher and series (song title, artist and album title) that would take a 3rd step out of the process.

I have a small list of trivial bugs - once ive finished trying out all the functions i'll post them too.

Great ideas, Rich. We are on the same page. Once I get the main component stable then I'll try to figure out the file upload and RSS creation - that was definitely in my plan as part of a whole package for church sermons.

I'll work on the module expansion - I think this is a natural next step - a little more complicated but doable. What I'll try to do is make a query in the parameters section of the module that allows you to pick a particular teacher, series, book, topic, etc with the same ability to set a limit as to the number of sermons listed.

It is currently possible to upload content within Joomla!'s Media manager. The key is to set the limit of the upload high enough in the main Joomla! global configuration. I'm not positive this will work as there may be a PHP limit that would interfere but its worth a try as a stop gap.

Where did you get the template? I'll see if I can look at the css, or you want to privately email me the files I can look that way. Go to \"Contact the author\" on this website.
