TOPIC: Number of studies?

Number of studies? 01 Apr 2009 18:39 #740

A silly little question, but I can't find the answer anywhere. In both the Bible Study Parameters and the Component Parameters for a Studieslist menu item, there is a field called "Number of studies to display", which defaults to 5. What does this do? The number of studies shown per page ("Display Num") by default appears to be 20, not 5, so it must be something other than what I'm thinking. The tooltip says, "Enter a number of studies to display in the module." But this is a component, not a module, so I'm not sure what that means either.

I indeed would like to change the "Display Num" initially selected in the Studies List - the page gets really long, so perhaps 10 rather than 20 would be nice. (Naturally the viewer can increase the number if they want to see more.) But I don't see where to set that.

Not a silly question at all. It took me a while to figure this out too. Here's the answer.

You are correct that this is a component and not a module. But there is a module that you can download from joomlacode.org/gf/project/biblestudy/frs/ that will show your study list on other pages of your website. The setting you listed "Number of studies to display" does indeed only affect the module.

Now for your main question. How to change the component display from 20 to 10, or any other number. This number comes from your Joomla configuration. Here are the steps to change it.

1. Log in to the administrator side of your Joomla website.
2. Click on 'Global Configuration'
3. Change the field 'List Length' from 20 to the value you want.
4. Click 'Apply' or 'Save'

Darren

Thanks, Darren. The Global Configuration being, er, global, what other lists would be affected by this setting? Off the top of my head I can't think what sort of lists with pagination happen in Joomla (perhaps because it's getting late at night and I'm coming down with a cold...), but if there are such lists whose items are one-liners (rather than sermons with four-line descriptions and several other pieces of info), I might want to leave it at 20 after all.

Karen is right - the label in the config says "module" but should say component. The change to the number of listings per page should be set in the menu item created to link to the studieslist.

I can confirm that at the current time the menu item's "number of studies to display" parameter has no effect on the component (or a module, which is logical, since menu items call components, not modules). I just now installed the Bible Study module to see how it works, and I see that the Module Parameters include a "number of studies to display" parameter, which correctly affects the module. So the only change would be making the code for the menu item parameter do its job, and then change the wording of the tooltip to match. I also can confirm that the Joomla Global Configuration "list length" setting does affect the Studies List component, but it would be great if the menu item parameter had that job instead.
