TOPIC: RSS

RSS 13 Mar 2009 05:48 #705

Hi y'all.

1) Why can't I get the Joomla Syndication module to show on my Bible Studies page? I've got the studies attached to a menu item and the Syndication module selects that menu. However, the RSS feed link does not display.

2) I'm registering feeds with FEEDburner. Do I still have to use your Podcast thing ... I say "thing" because I do not have a clue what I'm doing with podcast ... learning as I go! I chose feedburner because they will podcast WMA files. (Thank goodness we do not have to change to mp3.)

Guidance appreciated.

thanks so much...

Hi Vickie - looks like you posted the same basic question twice.

Yes - you do have to use the podcasting feature of biblestudy. The study listing itself doesn't generate xml.

So 1. Create a new podcast by going to the podcast tab on the biblestudy admin side and hitting "new"
2. Fill out the page the best you can (you don't have to have every field filled in)
3. Save that podcast
4. Go into the media file records you have created and you'll see a place to associate that media file with a particular podcast
5. Now go back to the podcast tab and open that podcast you made. there will be an icon at the top to write the xml file - click on that
6. Now go to Joomla's News Feed component and create a feed to that xml file you created in the biblestudy podcast tab.
7. Then you can create a menu link to that news feed and you'll see the listings show up then
8. You can also download the biblestudy podcast publish plugin from the JoomlaCode site (see files location link to the left) which will automatically publish your feeds once a day
9. Then go to feedburner and point to the xml file you created (we use that service too at our church).

Hopefully this will solve your problem.

Blessings,

Tom

Sorry for the double post. it wasn't clear to me what was happening. I guess I'm used to Joomla boards where posts show up right away. I'm sorry.

Thanks for the help!

Vickie

okeedokee. I've got lots of things working. Yea for me!

I'm want to hack for this xml feed title, though:

2009-03-08 00:00:00 - John 19 - A Story Written on Our Hearts
Saturday, March 07, 2009 7:00 PM

I'd rather it read:
A Story Written on Our Hearts - John 19
Sunday, March 08, 2009

I've looked at the code. The new Joomla (1.5) throws me a bit, but I can do it if I know where and what to do.

Anyone? Any ideas?

Thanks so much!!! Blessings to you, too, Tom. (It's more than we can think or imagine ...)
Vickie
p.s. This is so the Feedburner Headline Animator displays correctly.
<p style="margin-top:10px; margin-bottom:0; padding-bottom:0; text-align:center; line-height:0"><a href="http://feeds2.feedburner.com/~r/mcc_audio/~6/1"><img src="http://feeds2.feedburner.com/mcc_audio.1.gif" alt="MCC ... Delivered!" style="border:0"></a></p><p style="margin-top:5px; padding-top:0; font-size:x-small; text-align:center"><a href="http://feedburner.google.com/fb/a/headlineanimator/install?id=60ne6kdnd8fmp3m01a7a1se6go&amp;w=1" onclick="window.open(this.href, 'haHowto', 'width=520,height=600,toolbar=no,address=no,resizable=yes,scrollbars'); return false" target="_blank">&uarr; Grab this Headline Animator</a></p>

Great, Vickie! I'll pass this on to the developer that's been working on the RSS.

Update:
wierdness!
=======
I tried to hack:
podcastedit.php in components/com_biblestudy/controllers

Nothing changed. I mean I cleared caches (server and local). I deleted the .xml before rewriting. nothing changed. i even logged out, cleared firefox and Renamed podcastedit.php to see if the Write would blow up. It wrote the .xml and
literally nothing in the tags changed.

OBVIOUSLY, there's something I'm missing ... I've hacked Joomla for years and I've never seen this happen.

podcastedit.php is now restored to its original self.

This must be my lesson in humility today.

ugh.
