Using Joomla! -core articles? 01 Apr 2009 06:27 #738

Hello Tom and other developers,

When I was building a site which is goint to have a lot of articles as a text and perhaps some audio teachings, I came up with this idea:

- Instead of writing the Study Text at Bible Study Details, the user would be able to use Joomla! -core articles as Study Details
- Or when the user saves Stydy Details, they are saved into Joomla! core articles under a certain Section and Category which the user is able to choose at the same time
- The bible study component would become a component which enriches the Joomla! -core funtions, instead of being an isolated part from the core
- In the future this would provide a more safer ground for the development, if there's going to be a another big change as the change from the 1.0 to 1.5 was, at least the migration of core is secured by the developers of Joomla!

At the moment I do not have the skills to this, but what do you think about the idea?

This is a great idea, Pekka. We have put it in as a feature request.

Hi Tom,

This is really cool. There are really two feature requests here:

1. To select pre-existing articles to use for study text. Select the section, category, and article and boom, that becomes your study details. This has a huge advantage of then being able to use other components like forum autocomment solutions like Agora's to tie a new forum thread to each study details and enabling a much more powerful commenting system. Medium Priority. (Part of this seems to exist today with the ability to link a new media file to an article - I'm still not certain why that was put in the media files area, instead of the studies area).

AND

2. Be able to create articles in a predefined section and category from the study text. This is a lower priority, since with the above, you get all of the benefits, without all of the effort. Perhaps once the study text is typed out, it can turn into a link to the article instead of causing duplication of effort.

What do you think?

Best Regards,
Eric

Hi Eric,

I've put this in as a new feature request. I worked on this prior and it was very difficult - and I know the Joomla core is changing dramatically with version 1.6. They are doing away with Sections and just using nested categories. This no doubt will affect how content items are created and obtained from the db.

We may not get to this until version 7, which is the next major release after 6.2.

OK. Fair enough. But then, if I want to accomplish the same thing (to present as little of effort as possible for our non-technical staff to do in order to post sermon data along with the recordings), what workflow would you recommend to get that done?

I want to make it very simple for people whose greatest web experience is with GMail and facebook to be able to post sermons and sermon data. What do you think?

Hi Eric,

I'd suggest allowing front end subbmission from the Admin tab and then having your person login and got to the studieslist on the frontend. They can create a study and a mediafile record and even upload from that screen.

Check it out!
