TOPIC: Topics & tags

Topics & tags 01 Mar 2009 20:05 #634

Currently, you can only select one topic per study. This can be quite the conundrum, figuring out which one applies most.

Would it be possible to treat topics like "tags" on a blog? Where you can apply multiple topics to the same entry?

This is an interesting idea which we'll explore.

Cool.

Selecting the topic is currently the hardest part of adding a new sermon. It's so hard to narrow it down to just one!

We've had requests like this before. Probably what makes sense is what you suggest, having instead of a topics list, just having a text box where you create topics and separate them by commas. Then the component will parse them out when presenting a topic drop down. I originally just lifted one level of topics from SermonCentral.com for the first release of biblestudy. We really haven't looked at it since then. This might be a good solution.

Speaking as a blogger, I can point to one strength of the current system over a tag system: When you're writing a new entry, it can be really hard to remember what tags you've used in the past. So you end up with both "The life of Jesus", and "Jesus' life and ministry", and "Jesus' ministry", etc. Having the list of previously-used topics is a major strength.

If you do go to a tag system, it would be good to have some way to select from the previously-used ones:
1.) An auto-complete in the "enter the tags" text box.
2.) A handy display near the text box, that shows what tags have been used.

Along the lines of #2, maybe you could keep the "Topic" drop-down menu, but have a textbox for optional additional topics. That way, we could consult the drop-down when adding topics.

I'm following you - so before we implement we'll think about this - I like your suggestion of either having recently used tags in a drop down or perhaps the existing topics drop down as a reference but you can type you own into the text box if you want.

I know there is a way to do auto complete using javascript but I'm not that talented but we'll do what we can!
