TOPIC: Playing M4a files

Playing M4a files 12 May 2011 16:02 #2594

Hi Tom. Has anyone been able to get m4a files to play using the internal player? I have a site that is using them with JBS 6.2.4, but it takes about 4 minutes before the file starts to play.

Though I haven't heard specifically about m4a it should be no different than with m4v. What's happening is the site is using what is called "progressive download" - the file is actually downloading, not streaming, but the player will start actually playing the file once a certain portion has downloaded. It could be that this is the entire file - I don't know the specifics of how this works.

To stream a file it would have to be on a streaming site such as YouTube, Vimeo, SermonAudio.com, etc.

That having been said - I believe for mp3 the internal player will start to play them almost immediately - why, I'm not sure.

Nick is our media player expert - if he is monitoring this post he may have a thought.

Maybe someone here has set this up on their server and are using it along with JBS.. I will really appreciate some help here.

we are running a dedicated server to host our website and hold our media. its Windows base and I have it setup to live stream some of our services. I read a post about playing the .mp4 files from a dedicated server so that it would start playing right away.
Im not an expert administrating the server so I dont know if you or someone on your team could help me set this up?

Windows server 2008, windows media services and live smooth streaming server are installed..

Thanks.

I moved this topic into a new category specifically for help in playing media files. Nick is our media expert so hopefully he'll have some insight here.

Sorry I am a little confused, the first few posts are talking about m4v and m4a, then the last post is taking about mp4. Testing this from my site both mp4 and flv will start playing right away.
