TOPIC: Updating to Version 7 of BibleStudy

Updating to Version 7 of BibleStudy 17 Sep 2011 16:57 #2804

A few questions about the upgrade to BibleStudy v7
1) Are there clear step-by-step instructions provided for a non-complicated person like me?
2) Would my current setup (which another BibleStudy technician totally helped me with for many hours) remain the same?
(doverfoursquare.org/5/sermons.html is where I view the Sermons ... which are actually at www.doverfoursquare.us)
3) Assuming my configuration would stay the same, what would the learning curve be to add new mp3 sermons and notes?

Thanks again for such a wonderful tool!

Hi again David.

Never fear - most of your configuration will stay the same and it's not that complicated.

I assume that you are wanting to migrate JBS to a different folder. For instance, I'm now converting my church website to Joomla 1.7 - I used JUpgrade which created my new site in the Jupgrade folder on my webserver - though it's using the same db but using a different prefix.

Anyway - here are the steps:

1. Install the JBS Migration tool on your Joomla 1.5 website. Find it here:

2. Run the migration component and backup your database to your computer

3. Install the same migration component on your 1.7 installation.

4. This time you want to upload and Migrate. Pick the same file that you downloaded

5. Install JBS 7.0.1.

This will take a while as the component must run through every one of your records and do some adjustments to bring them up to our version 7.0.1 and create ACL records for them.

6. If all is successful, go to the Template Display and check out the settings. For some db's we notice that some settings don't come over so you might need to redo those. Also go to the Administration tab of JBS and especially click on the link at the top for Filters and Permissions. Set the filters so that your user group does not filter html in the studies.

For adding new sermons and mp3's it should be the same as with 6.2.x. Start a new study under the Studies tab and basically fill out the information. Save it and then go to MediaFIles and click New - be sure to connect your uploaded mp3 to that study in the drop down.

I recommend that you upload files separately, though you can also do it from within the MediaFile record through Joomla's Media Manager.

Let me know you run into any problems.

Thanks, Tom.

I may have to wait until I can dedicate enough time to do this.

Quick question: Am I wrong to assume that all of the studies and notes will not have to be reloaded after I have upgraded? (I make weekly backups of the Joomla database)

One more question:
I only use Joomla for the purpose using BibleStudy with my website (which is non-Joomla). I use an iframe to load up the BibleStudy page. Consequently, my only reason for upgrading to the new Joomla version would be to upgrade BibleStudy ver7.

Is BibleStudy-ver7 just an update to work with the new Joomla, or are there significant differences in BibleStudy-ver7.
What would those differences be? Would BibleStudy load faster?

Thanks, again.
David

Hi David,

You are right - all of your studies will be ported over using the migration component.

There are significant improvements to JBS in version 7. This is especially true on the administrative side. The site has a new edit function but the other site functions are mostly the same. One neat thing you can do with 7 is to paste in embed codes into the media file so you can very easily paste in YouTube embed codes, for instance.

I think it's totally worth it. I am just now in the process of doing it for myself - though my entire site is Joomla based.

I'd suggest you go ahead - when we come out with JBS 7.1 it will run significantly faster - and the update to that version will be a simple one click from the Joomla 1.7 backend.

Thanks so much. I will definitely be upgrading as soon as I get some free time in these coming weeks.

Just a few more questions:

1) Are you suggesting that I use "JUpgrade" to install the new version of Joomla to a separate directory? (Currently Joomla is installed in my root directory.) If so, will this mean that I have two versions of Joomla installed? I guess I'm not sure how the Joomla upgrade will work.

2) I this Joomla sql Database backed up and stored on my computer and in my hosting. I have used an FTP program (WinSCP) to dowload the entire Joomla website to my computer. Are there any other files that I need to backup before starting this upgrade?

Thanks again.

Hi David,

JUpgrade will create a new folder on your server called jupgrade. Once you've done the upgrade you'll go to that site and make all the adjustments you need, like adding a new template, etc. Once everything is good then move the contents of that folder to the root - replacing all the files there. You might then have to adjust the configuration.php file to make sure it is pointing to the right folder.

It is a good idea to backup your site and your db first. I use Akeba Backup for that purpose.
