The Transformation of Jacob - part 2
Genesis 30
mp3 audio file
As this chapter opens Leah, Jacob's first wife, had borne him four sons: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah.

Now the jealously between Rachael and Leah grow even more intense.

Verse 1

Okay - perhaps that was a little bit of an exaggeration to say "give me children or I die!" but it points to the somewhat extreme personality of Rachael. I wonder if Jacob thought back to an event with Essau when he said "give me stew or I will die"

That being said - having children was THE thing in those days. Without the ability to bear children you were of little value in that society.

Jacob responds interestingly based on what we know of him so far.

Verse 2

In a way Jacob is saying "hey, it's not my fault - I have fathered four sons already - so it's you God has frowned upon!"

Notice that neither of them prayed about this or sought the Lord. It becomes evident later that Rachael has a ways to go in her relationship with Yahweh.

Verse 3

So Rachael makes the same mistake that Sarai made - giving her maidservant to Jacob to have kids through her - and this kind of one-up-man-ship ensues. It doesn't really help Rachael though.

Verses 4 - 6

Dan means: Lord or judge. So apparently Rachael feels her scheme has vindicated her.

Verse 7

Naphtali means "wrestling"

Verses 9 - 11

Not to be outdone - Leah gets in the game and gives her maidservant to Jacob who must have been getting pretty tired by this time. Anyway - Zilpah has a son and Leah names him Gad, which means "overcoming" or "victory."

How'd you like the names of your kids to reflect a jealous struggle you were having with other members of the family?

Verse 12

Asher means: "prosperity" or "happiness"
But we see that all this wasn't enough for Rachael - she really wanted kids of her own.

Verses 13 - 16

Okay - so what are mandrakes anyway? It's the fruit of the madragora vernalis plant which is though to this day to be aid in fertility. They are really really ugly plants - they look to me like squids taken out of the water and laid on the ground to dry. Apparently they are to this day used in magic - another suggestion of Rachael's reliance on anything but God for her well being.

Do they really work - probably not. In this case it was Leah who got pregnant, not Rachael. But Rachael is desperate.

It's amazing how low we will go when we are so insistent on getting our way in our time.

Ps 38:15
5 I wait for you, O LORD;
you will answer, O Lord my God.

1 Peter 5:6-7
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Verses 17 - 18

Issachar means "reward"

Verse 19 - 21

Zebulun means "dwelling"
Dinah means "judgment" Dinah becomes important later - that's why she's included here.

Verses 22 - 24

Joseph means "he shall add" but there is a close allusion to the Hebrew in Rachael's statement "He has taken away my reproach." The words "taken away" is the word for "to gather" or "remove"

So God listens to Rachel when she calls on Him - not when she employs trickery or magic. But notice in verse 24 it almost seems as if she is saying "well finally - you took your time - I've got some catching up to do so add another son to me quick!"

Next we see Jacob begin the process of leaving - but Laban knows a good thing when he sees it and starts really putting the screws to Jacob.

Verses 25 - 30

Laban wants him to stay - we find out later partly its because he really doesn't want his daughters to go away - but he says that by "divination" he has learned that he got rich because of his proximity to Jacob.

Here's another place where we see Jacob's spiritual growth. He says plainly that it wasn't some occult source that provided the blessing - but the LORD. The author inserts the personal name of God here - Yaweh. It is only through a personal relationship with God that blessing can occur.

Jacob then says - not "what do I get out of it" but "when can I do something for my own household." He realizes there is more to the world than himself. Perhaps it was born partly of having to leave his family behind.

Verses 31 - 33

Usually a shepherd would get 10-20 percent of the sheep and milk products. The percentage of non-black goats and non-white sheep would have been quite a bit smaller than that - so it looks as if Laban is getting the better deal. But apparently Laban isn't satisfied with just that.

Verses 34 - 36

To further reduce Jacob's breeding stock he removed all the speckled and spotted animals - boy what a conniver! Then he moves those flocks away entirely.

Verses 37 - 43

Okay - so what happened here? Jacob is merely using selective breeding techniques - putting strong animals together to breed strong animals. Apparently there was some folk medicine of the day that suggested that whatever was in an animal's field of vision while they mated was affect the offspring. It doesn't work that way - what we conclude is that all the blessing of the birthing of speckled and spotted animals was God's blessing on Jacob.

Conclusions

How does God go about destroying the flesh and creating new character in us?

- He mirrors ourselves for us in others (his wives, and Laban)
- Perhaps Jacob saw what he really used to be like and decided, there's a better way.
- When you make a stand for God to be your provider ( GOD has bless you Laban, not divination, and "don't give me anything")
- You see patience begin to develop (Jacob wanted to go, but stayed)
- You see God bless your life, but not through obvious means or your schemes (the branches)
- You begin to hear God direct you more and more (the beginning of Ch 31)

Trust God and do your best

Notice that Jacob didn't just pray and not act - I suppose he could have - but perhaps he wasn't there yet in his relationship with God. He recognized from the dream that God was in his life - and was the source of blessing. But that didn't stop him from applying his mind in a sensible way to provide for his family.

We can do the same - give your life to the Lord, realize He is the one in control, then use the gifts and the mind He's given you and then turn it over to Him for the blessing.

Next time we see God move Jacob - finally breaking free from the hold of Laban. In it we see ourselves breaking free from the hold the world and enemy tries to have on us.
